Peer Speech Prompts

This Mike McIlvain blog was initiated through a Summer 2009 program through Texas A&M International University's Professional Resource Opportunities for Faculty, under interim director Lisa Flores, with the consultation of Jack Mino, of Holyoke Community College, Mass.

Everything was filmed on the Mino Flip Camera. The aim of the five following recorded brainstorming sessions between two TAMIU seniors is to spark similar sessions for speech students of Mike McIlvain. Ruben and Isaac are only a few years ahead of the current crop of speech students, but have taken the course, other relatd courses, and have applied what they knew.

Main intentions of this blog aim toward prompting individual successes through Ruben and Isaac. Each classroom student is an audience, as entire classes are eventually. Other educators will, hopefully, find interest in this research, too.

The following first prompt is around the introduction speech. The rest are the how-to, informative, persuasive, and ceremonial, or special occasion, speeches. These are shortened demonstration versions to fit requirements for the blog.

Introduction Speech Prompt -- Ruben and Isaac -- On occasion when introducing a person, place, or thing, did advanced thinking, preparation, and inquiry make a difference over unplanned speaking, and how?

How-To Speeches

Prompt -- Ruben and Isaac -- From your experiences, in and out of classrooms, is it possible to present a how-to speech without adequate research, and, or discussion with at least one expert on the topic?

Informative Speeches

Prompt -- Ruben and Isaac -- How often does informing people about anything come into use, and can you name an example, or two, of how important this speech, or conversational mode can be?

Persuasive Speeches

Prompt -- Ruben and Isaac -- Can you name any particular instances in which the need to persuade someone to do, consider, or try something was important, and what happened through your actions? How often can you see persuasive speech used, and what value might you give to it as a craft?

Ceremonial Speeches

Prompt -- Ruben and Isaac -- Are there any special occasion speeches you have made, seen, or heard which stand out, and why?
